What you track, and what you pay for
These products track work and progress, but cover different scopes. A support ticket, a project task and an hour bank are not equivalent. Features below may require a different plan or module from the entry price.

Two different scopes
Choose for the job at hand
Jira Service Management makes more sense if
- You run ITSM processes for incidents, problems and changes.
- You need assets, configuration or knowledge management.
- Your teams already work deeply inside Jira and the Atlassian ecosystem.
- You want to configure queues, forms and workflows around your organisation.
Tolus makes more sense if
- You sell maintenance hours for individual client projects.
- Clients need tickets, used hours and remaining balance in one place.
- You want agency-specific statuses within five shared categories.
- Colleagues and client users should be unlimited while pricing follows active retainers.
Decision guide
Compare the capabilities your team needs
| Priority need | What it means |
|---|---|
| Manage incidents, changes and IT assets | Jira Service Management is built for this scope. |
| Share a maintenance-retainer balance | That is a core object in Tolus. |
| Heavily customise workflows | Jira Service Management offers the broader system. |
| Use one workflow across all projects | Tolus supports custom statuses within five shared categories. |
| Show the client how ticket time affects the balance | Tolus brings both into the project summary. |
| Hand a ticket to a coding agent | Jira supports it: Atlassian lists Claude, Codex, GitHub Copilot and its own agent. Tolus supports it through its MCP server. |
| Count the agent’s time against the client’s retainer | Tolus logs that time in the retainer report the client can read. |
Verdict
The decision is about the system around the tickets
Choose Jira Service Management when requests belong to a broader IT system with incidents, changes, assets, knowledge and Atlassian integrations.
Choose Tolus to handle client maintenance requests and share a retainer balance calculated from logged time.
An IT services company can keep Jira for internal work and use Tolus as the client portal for maintenance. There is no native sync, so test the arrangement on one project before extending it.
FAQ
Questions before deciding
Does Tolus replace every Jira use case?
No. Tolus has no sprints, assets, ITSM change management or a workflow automation engine.
Do we need to migrate the Jira archive?
No. Test active projects and their next retainers. The Tolus Jira migration brings over projects, tickets, comments, people and attachments; worklogs, custom fields and automations are not copied.
Can we keep Jira internally?
Yes, but there is no native sync today. Define which system is authoritative for each flow.
Can Jira hand a ticket to an AI agent?
Yes. Atlassian presents Jira as a tool to orchestrate agents: a work item can go to Claude, Codex, GitHub Copilot or Jira’s own agent. GitHub opened the public preview of Copilot coding agent for Jira in March 2026. The pages reviewed do not show that time being counted against a client retainer balance. In Tolus, the agent’s time goes into the retainer the client can read.
